Trevor Suggested we go to Segesta

The view from our room in Planeta Estate winery.

This day we went to see Segesta, one of the other iconic archaeological sites in Sicily. On the way, travelling on the freeway, there were these huge flocks of little birds (maybe one thousand or more birds). They looked cool flying around and then suddenly they were directly overhead almost swarming around us. Happened too fast to take a picture but worth mentioning as it was super cool. Found a link on vimeo - the birds are starlings and the phenomenon is called murmurations.

On a hill is the Segesta Temple circa 420BCE. Experts believe it was never finished due to a number of indications, specifically that it lacks any painted or sculptured ornamentation, altar, and deity dedication. This temple escaped destruction by the Carthaginians in the late 5th century BCE. The town of Segesta was eventually destroyed by the vandals after the fall of the Roman Empire.

The countryside around Segesta was absolutely beautiful.

The Greek Theatre at Segesta.

We checked out the beach at Menfi.

We watched a show on Sicily called Sicily Unpacked. They recommended a seafood restaurant that was close by to where we were staying so we went there for dinner. Fresh seafood straight from the sea.  Above, baby octopus.  Below, anchovies.

Spaghetti with John Dory roe.  Yum!
