Uh-Oh! Lava Flow

Saturday, 14 October 2017
For our second day in the north face of Mount Etna it was a beautiful sunny Saturday and we had the choice of going into Taormina which is the famous town in Sicily where they had the G7 Summit in May of this year or to avoid the tourist crowds and go and explore one of Europe’s largest active volcanoes.
You can see in this photo the dark remains of the 2002 eruption and how close the lava flow has come to the ski run.  Being mid autumn, the colours of the trees were starting to change.

The ski field is called Linguaglossa, meaning “Big Tongue of Lava”. Some of the pillions right in the path of the lava flow.

The remnants of river of lava flowing over the hill.
Where’s Trevor?

After exploring the Volcano we decided to go for a drive around the villages and wineries that dot the northern slopes of the Volcano.  The area is known for its pistachios and walnuts and here they had walnuts drying in the sun.

In Castiglione di Sicilia we wandered up to the top to see the castle.
